THE LAPLAND WAR CAMPAIGN
4th - 19th September, 1944
Finland signs the Moscow Armistice ending the hostilities. Part of this Finland has to drive the German troops out of its territory. Allied Control Commission is send to Helsinki to oversee the fulfillment of the armistice. At first, the Finns and the Germans negociate peaceful withdrawal. USSR demands more aggressive action from the Finnish government.
15th September, 1944
Operation Tanne Ost begins at Suursaari, marking the first bigger engagement between the Finns and the Germans. The German landing operation ends to an failure. The Finnish-German relations are further strained.
28th September, 1944
First skirmishes in Nortern Finland at Pudasjärvi and Olhava. Germans destroy infastructure according to their withdrawal plan, Operation Birke; further slowing down the Finnish advance.
30th September, 1944
Lieutenant General Siilasvuo's III Corps launches a landing operation from Oulu to Tornio, surprising the Germans. Lt.Col Wolf Halsti's Infantry Regiment 11 spearheads the landing operation.
